Sand Cats Habitat Description. They prefer flat or undulating terrain with sparse vegetation, retreating into burrows during extreme conditions to avoid hunger and thirst. Sometimes this cat will travel about 10 kilometers in a night which is over 6 miles.
It is one of few wild cat species that occupies true desert habitat. Historically, habitat loss and fragmentation of the two rare habitats where sand lizards are found (dune and heath) has been very severe. It is listed as near threatened by iucn and in cites appendix ii.
The distribution of the sand cats is also extended to the egyptian rocky deserts.
They are found in very arid habitats with little to no vegetation. Sometimes this cat will travel about 10 kilometers in a night which is over 6 miles. Sand cat is a solitary, nocturnal mammalivore. Conditions are extreme in the desert, and temperatures can reach 124º f during the day, and 31º f at night.
